How to use the window replacement cost calculator

  1. Count the windows. Count each window you want to replace. A pair of windows in one frame (a mulled unit) counts as two.
  2. Choose the type and frame. Double-hung vinyl is the most common and the base price. Fiberglass, wood and clad windows cost more.
  3. Choose the installation. An insert (pocket) window fits inside the old frame and is the cheapest. Full-frame replacement removes everything down to the studs, which is needed when the frame is rotten, and adds about $150 to $350 per window.
  4. Add glass and floors. Triple pane and impact glass cost more. Windows on upper floors need ladders or scaffolding and usually cost about 10% more.

Worked example

Replacing 10 double-hung vinyl windows on the first floor with insert installation and double pane low-E glass costs about $4,500 to $9,000, or about $675 per window on average. The same 10 windows installed full-frame add about $2,500, for a typical total near $9,250.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to replace 10 windows?

Ten standard double-hung vinyl windows with insert installation usually cost about $4,500 to $9,000 installed. Wood or fiberglass windows and full-frame installation can push it to $10,000 to $15,000 or more.

What is the cheapest way to replace windows?

Vinyl insert windows in standard sizes are the cheapest. The installer keeps the existing frame and trim and fits the new window inside it.

What is the difference between insert and full-frame replacement?

An insert window slides into the old frame, so it is faster and cheaper but slightly reduces the glass area. Full-frame replacement removes the whole old window down to the studs, which lets the installer fix rot and add new insulation and flashing.

Are triple pane windows worth it?

In cold climates triple pane windows cut heat loss and noise, but they cost about 15% more and take longer to pay back. In mild climates double pane low-E glass is usually enough.

How long does it take to replace windows?

A crew typically installs 8 to 15 insert windows in a day. Full-frame replacement takes about twice as long.
