How to use the kitchen remodel cost calculator

  1. Measure the kitchen. Enter the floor length and width in feet. Many US kitchens are 100 to 200 sq ft; a 10 × 15 ft kitchen is 150 sq ft.
  2. Choose the remodel level. A refresh keeps the cabinet boxes and layout. A mid-range remodel replaces cabinets, counters, appliances and flooring. A high-end remodel uses custom cabinetry, stone surfaces and professional appliances.
  3. Pick your area. Labor in large coastal metros often runs 25% or more above the national average.
  4. Tick any layout changes. Moving plumbing or gas, adding an island and removing a wall are the biggest add-ons.

How the estimate works

Every kitchen remodel has costs that stay about the same whatever the size (sink, faucet, appliance hook-ups, permits, design) plus costs that grow with the room (cabinet runs, counters, flooring, drywall, paint). The calculator adds both:

Cost = (fixed cost for the level + price per sq ft × kitchen size + layout changes) × area factor

The breakdown uses the typical share of a kitchen budget published by the National Kitchen and Bath Association: cabinets about 29%, installation labor about 17%, appliances about 14% and countertops about 10%. Flooring, lighting, walls, windows and plumbing make up the rest.

Worked example

A 10 × 15 ft kitchen (150 sq ft) with a mid-range remodel in an average-cost area costs about $27,000 to $47,000, with a typical budget of $37,000 (about $247 per square foot). Of that, cabinets take about $10,730, labor about $6,290, appliances about $5,180 and countertops about $3,700. Adding an island brings the typical budget to about $43,500.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a kitchen remodel cost?

For a typical 150 sq ft kitchen, expect about $10,000 to $21,500 for a refresh, $27,000 to $47,000 for a mid-range remodel and $60,000 or more for a high-end remodel, before layout changes.

How much does a kitchen remodel cost per square foot?

Mid-range kitchen remodels typically land around $200 to $370 per square foot, including cabinets, counters, appliances and labor. Small kitchens cost more per square foot because sinks, appliances and hook-ups cost the same whatever the size.

What is the most expensive part of a kitchen remodel?

Cabinets, at roughly 29% of a typical budget, followed by labor and appliances. Moving plumbing or removing a wall are the most expensive layout changes.

How long does a kitchen remodel take?

A refresh can take one to two weeks. A full mid-range remodel usually takes 6 to 12 weeks including ordering cabinets, longer when permits or custom parts are involved.

How much contingency should I add?

Add 10% to 20% to the estimate. Older homes often hide outdated wiring, plumbing or water damage that only shows up once the old cabinets come out.
